You know what is more satisfying than slaying an enemy and taking their loot? Lock-picking a chest or a door and finding loot ripe for the taking!

In Labyrinths and Legends lock-picking is one of the action skills that will prove to be challenging, exciting and you don’t have to just play a rogue to be good at it.

For this article, we are going to overview the concepts for Lock-Picking as of the writing date of this article. My caveat here is that this can and probably will change as we complete playtesting and development etc.

As you adventure in Labyrinths and Legends you will inevitably come across a locked door, chest or possible even a jail cell that you will want to open. This is when you will have the option to try your hand at lock-picking! Here is how it works…

How is each Lock Set?
Each lock is made up of 1-6 tumblers and each tumbler will have a number or a range of number that will need to be match to open the tumbler. The number tumblers a lock has and the number scale and ranges will depend on how difficult the lock is. Your goal is to unlock each tumbler to open the lock.

Here is an example of what would be behind the scenes for the door lock pictured below. This is a door lock that is a little harder to unlock but not too difficult.

  • Tumbler 1 (Far Left): 5-6
  • Tumbler 2: 4-5
  • Tumbler 3: 2-4
  • Tumbler 4: 4-5
  • Tumbler 5: 1-3
  • Tumbler 6 (Far Right): 4-6

Initial Attempt to Unlock
The first thing you will do when lock-picking is to roll one of your base dice (for this example your base dice are 2d6, so you will roll 1d6) for each of the tumblers and lock in your number.

Each time you adjust the tumbler number if you hit the number range needed it will automatically unlock. Below you will see that Tumbler 2, 5, and 6 are now unlocked.

If First You Don’t Succeed…
Unless you are extremely lucky not all the tumblers will have unlocked, so you now have some work to do. With your Lock-Picking skill comes three actions that you can take Reset Pick, Swap Pick and Twist Pick. The amount of times you can take each action will depend on how much skill and training you have in lock-picking. Each one allows you to manipulate your initial rolls.

Reset Pick (Re-roll)
The Rest Pick will allow you to re-roll one of the tumblers. In the below example we re-roll the first tumbler. When we did the re-roll we rolled a 5 and the tumbler unlocked!

Swap Pick (Swap Numbers)
The Swap Pick will allow you to swap two number with each other. We choose to switch tumblers 3 and 4. As you can see tumbler 3 unlocked!

Adjust Pick (Adjust Numbers)
The Adjust Pick will allow you to change the number (increase or decrease) on a tumbler. We adjusted tumbler 1 and 4.

Click … What a great thing to hear!
As you can see on our final adjustments of the tumblers the door was UNLOCKED! Now time to see whats  hiding behind door number one and with my skill I can go look behind door number two and three! 🙂

What about Traps?
Some locks will be marked with a Detect Trap icon (lower left corner), this doesn’t mean that there is a trap but there is a potential for it to have one. If you desire you will be able to attempt to detect a trap and if found disarm it. We will be showcasing the detect trap and disarm trap skills at a later date!

How do you acquire more lock-picking skills?
The special Lock-Picking skills will be acquired from multiple sources. Certain Classes, Races, and Pets will provide additional lock-picking skills and you will also be able to acquire enhancement of these skills from certain NPCs in the world.

Well, I hope this post helps provide some insight into the Lock-Picking system of Labyrinths and Legends. We know you will find it an engaging and a fun rogue feeling as you try to unlock the tumblers.
